Parliament, Prime Minister & the King: Who Has the Power?

A Beginner’s Guide to the UK Constitution

The constitution of the United Kingdom is often described as being ‘unwritten’. This is not strictly true, in that much of the constitution is written down in various places, such as Acts of Parliament and judgments of the courts. It is therefore perhaps better to describe the UK constitution as being ‘uncodified’, in that there is no single, special document called ‘The Constitution’. This makes the UK highly unusual: most countries in the world have a written constitutional document. In this introductory lecture, you will learn about some of the fundamental sources and principles of the UK constitution and its evolution over time to cover England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
